Career

Brian won his first pari-mutuel race while he was still in high school aboard a horse named Alicia Blue Chip in 1:58.2…He began his professional career at Vernon Downs and in 1990 he won the Dick Mumpton Memorial Award for the most promising driver at the central New York oval…In 1991 he won the first of three consecutive UDR titles at Vernon…At the conclusion of the ‘91 season, Sears received the United States Harness Writers’ Rising Star Award…In 1994 Sears moved from Vernon to The Meadows and he finished second behind perennial champion Dave Palone in both wins and earnings in each of his nine campaigns there…In 2003, Brian left his full-time commitment at The Meadows as he traveled throughout the country and picked up driving titles at Pompano Park and Pocono Downs…He also decided to tackle the best in the sport and headed to the Meadowlands…In 2004 he earned his first Meadowlands title…In 2005 he led all North American drivers in earnings with $15,085,992, at the time the highest single-season total ever…Set a record on Aug. 8, 2009, for earnings in a single day by a driver with his mounts capturing $1,555,674.50 at the Meadowlands, while winning the Hambletonian, Hambletonian Oaks and Peter Haughton Memorial…Top driver in earnings at The Red Mile in 2010 with $1,103,178.
Personal

Racing has been a family affair for Sears, a third generation horseman. His father, Jay, won more than 1,400 races and purses of over $3.3 million. Brian’s grandfather, the late Gene Sears, was also a 1,000-plus race winner who won $1.7 million in purses during his career...Although raised in a harness racing family, it was Brian’s father who urged his son to go to college and bypass a career in harness racing. But after two years of attending Auburn University’s preveterinary program, he could no longer just watch the sport he loved as a spectator. Favorite food is sushi…first car was a ’67 Chevy Camaro…has a Jack Russell named Riley…watches “Dexter,” “True Blood” and “Californication” on TV…greatest honor was returning home to Vernon Downs when his own bobblehead doll was introduced.
