Career

Smedshammer’s stable surpassed $2.5 million in purses for the eighth consecutive season in 2010…Leading the way were multiple-stakes winners Break The Bank K and Arch Madness…Break The Bank K won the Breeders Crown 3-year-old colt trot final last year on his way to banking $774,455 in earnings…Arch Madness, who upset Donato Hanover in the 2007 Breeders Crown for 3-year-old colt trotters, has won 19 of 56 starts and earned $2.4 million over the last four years…Smedshammer came to the U.S. in 1987 after a mandatory year in the Norwegian army and was virtually penniless when he took a job in the barn of fellow Norwegian Per Henriksen…He stayed with Henriksen for six months before heading back to Norway, where he continued to train harness horses…Trond returned to the U.S. a year later to work for Lindy Farms…In 1992, he opened a stable of his own at White Birch Farm in Allentown, N.J., and rose to prominence in 1997 with Bowlin For Dollars, who won a Hambletonian elimination and finished fourth in the final…Smedshammer co-owns many of his trainees, racing under the name American Viking Racing Stable…Was named the Glen Garnsey Trainer of the Year in 2004 by the members of the U.S. Harness Writers’ Association…He was also the Grand Circuit’s Trainer of the Year in both 2003 and 2004…Smedshammer guided Windsong’s Legacy to the 2004 Hambletonian and first Trotting Triple Crown in 32 years…The colt’s earnings of $1,713,806 were (at the time) the most ever recorded by a trotter in a single campaign…Smedshammer has won eight Breeders Crown trophies since breaking through with Stroke Play in 2003…Other top horses included Blur, Housethatruthbuilt, Strong Yankee, Creamy Mimi and Sand Vic.
Personal eats “everything,” but favorite meals are his mom’s cooking he eats during visits to his home in Norway…first job was working on the farm and picking potatoes at home during summers, though he didn’t get paid…first car was an Opel…has a French Bulldog named Miles...in his spare time he plays golf with friends or works around his farm at home…greatest racing experience was winning the Triple Crown work…is motivated by seeing results in horses, seeing them progress…favorite TV show is always changing, but is currently Two and a Half Men…people might be surprised to learn he’s a great cook…greatest moment of his life: “Every day is the greatest moment, not one in particular.”
