Career

The son of Hall of Fame reinsman Ron Waples, he began driving in 1984, but it was not until 1996 that he really emerged as a force to be reckoned with…That year he piloted 151 horses to the winner’s circle, nearly half the number of wins that he put up in his career prior to that season…One of the top drivers on the WEG Circuit for the past decade…Has been a finalist for the O’Brien Award as Canada’s Driver of the Year five times…He was the winner of this prestigious honor in 1998, 2001 and 2010…Waples’ driving numbers were down in 2006 due to the fact that he missed the final five months of the season after being involved in a serious racing accident at Mohawk on July 30…Top horses include Real Desire (winner in the 2000 Kentucky Sire Stakes Final at The Red Mile in a time of 1:50.4, a world record for a 2-year-old pacing colt on a mile track) and Liberty Balance, (a 2001 O’Brien Award winner as the top 3-year-old trotting colt in Canada, he was a wire-to-wire winner for Waples in the $906,018 Breeders Crown Final)… Waples was the regular driver for three O’Brien Award winners in 2010: Dreamfair Eternal (Horse of the Year, Older Pacing Mare of the Year), San Pail (Older Trotting Horse of the Year) and Text Me (3-year-old Trotting Colt of the Year)…Waples drove the winners of 329 races in 2010 -- a season in which his mounts earned $7.8 million in purses, his best year in nearly a decade.

Favorite food is steak…Randy’s first car was a Ford Granada…first job was grooming horses…Randy’s father is Hall of Famer Ron Wales, and his brother is trainer Ron Waples Jr…his favorite activities away from racing include being with his family and sleeping in…Randy’s fans would be surprised to learn how non-competitive he is when he is away from the track…his favorite TV show is “Seinfeld”…favorite movie is “Forrest Gump”…favorite band is Aerosmith…his greatest life moment was holding his daughter for the first time.
